“It took being forced into discussion with all kinds of different people with different views to really impress…the importance of impartiality and understanding,” shared Lt. Governor candidate Tinu Sathya.
In the beginning of his Youth and Government career, Sathya started as a member of the Newspaper Press, and through the interviewing process, he was able to listen to a variety of perspectives and open up his “political bubble.” As Lt. Governor, he hopes to offer those same opportunities to everyone in the program. To accomplish this, Sathya plans to move special trainings online and create instructional videos to aid students who are new to Youth and Government.
Being online has been the greatest challenge for Sathya; the lack of in-person connection has made campaigning difficult and has made giving speeches “demoralizing.” However, he has been able to overcome these obstacles and continue on with the year as normally as possible. In the future, Sathya hopes Youth and Government will return to being in-person, but more importantly, if elected, he wishes to unify all members despite their differences in opinions.
Outside of Youth and Government, Sathya is active in many other clubs such as Model UN, Ethics Club, and IHS speech. He also participates in the Obama Legacy Initiative which focuses on ending food insecurity. After high school, Sathya intends to utilize what he’s learned to participate in the government and politics.
“I want to be able to make a change – a meaningful change – in office,” he shared.
